Cajuput oil is a volatile oil obtained by distillation from the leaves of the myrtaceous trees Melaleuca leucadendra, Melaleuca cajuputi, and probably other Melaleuca species. The trees yielding the oil are found throughout Maritime Southeast Asia and over the hotter parts of the Australian continent.
Cajeput essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs and has a pale greenish-yellow colour which distinguishes it from some of the other varieties of Melaleuca. The green colour is derived from traces of copper contained in the tree.
